Unique Oxford hotel converted from prison! Quite modern and clean. Staff are friendly. Location is superb. It’s a bit pricey but it’s worth it!
Nice hotel – much better than the other ‘famous’ hotel in the city. Room was clean, neatly decorated, bright when I wanted it to be, and cozy. I also had breakfast at the hotel, which was reasonably priced with excellent quality. If you didn’t know, the hotel was a prison before and now have been converted. If you get in and look through the open space with railings on all floors, you would know what i am talking about. Would recommend highly.

Malmaison is an old prison that has been converted into a hotel, which gives it a unique style. The rooms are nice, relatively spacious with modern interiors. Breakfast was nice, although the staff seemed to be arguing amongst themselves a bit much and they were relatively slow in taking orders for the cooked part of the breakfast. The location was good, allowing us to walk into Oxford easily. We stayed in Malmaison for two nights, during both nights we were quite warm. The air-conditioning or climate system or whatever they’d like to call it didn’t really function well and because you can’t open any windows the room heated up.
We had a great meal in the restaurant here. Service was excellent and the food was great. Simple, traditional British dishes supplemented with a few extra flourishes here and there. I had soup, followed by lamb with an excellent sticky toffee pudding to finish. Delicious.
Just returned from a three night stay at the Malmaison in Oxford. Very quirky, a former prison. We really enjoyed our stay and the staff couldn’t be more helpful and very friendly. Breakfast was very nice. We stayed in A Wing (top floor), and our room (a former cell) was very nice. What a great location too, in the grounds of the castle. Great experience
Spent my 40th here stayed in the duplex room. The room was great. the only bad thing about the hotel is there is no gym, pole or spa and the restaurant is not very romantic. The food toke long to come and was cold. If these points could be rectified then I feel that this place would truly be special. The staff where great and the hotel was clean.
I stayed here two years ago and have been looking forward to coming back. The room is still good, and the location of the hotel is excellent. ||||But what I remember was a amazing breakfast experience last time has now unfortunately become …
Lovely hotel chain, great service, luxurious rooms… all inside the former prison of the Oxford’s Castle (just 20 years ago this place was still a prison). Piece of art for interior designers and architects.
Malmaison Hotel in Oxford
Reading some of the recent reviews here what more can I say? Well, plenty more it seems. Overall a sadly underwhelming experience for the price, the only real upside being the great city centre location.Check in was a slow, cumbersome …
Recently spent two days in Oxford staying one night at the malmaison Hotel. Was warmly greeted by reception staff who booked us in. Very impressed with the double cell we were allocated. Lovely evening meal that night in the hotels restaurant and a beautifully cooked full English breakfast the next day, that really set us up for the day. Parking was easy, on booking in hand the keys in and its brought back at your requested time. Must say really enjoyed the whole experience of staying in such an historical building. Would not hesitate to recommend it and hopefully will have a return visit.
I waited over an hour and three-quarters for room service, which really isnt acceptable, but otherwise its a nice hotel, if a bit dark.
First day I was given a room full of dust. Soon after it was cleaned. Great! but then the ventilation made weird and strong sudden noises. This meant I woke up several times at middle of the night. Then I was changed rooms. They put me near …
Do not stay here if you expect to sleep. For some reason Malmasion thinks it’s acceptable to charge £300+ for a room built above an extremely noisy night club. I would have had a better nights sleep if I’d slept down the road in the bus shelter and I’d be not out of pocket. Thoroughly unimpressed.
Just had a couple of nights stay in a cell room||||To my horror the main bar which used to be the prison visitors room has shut, it was a real event to enjoy a drink in there, the only bar in hotel is a small basement bar
It’s a nice hotel, good service and lovely food, but our room was very close to the restaurants outside, which produced a lot of noise. This proved to be a problem, as the room was very hot and due to the noise, we couldn’t open the balcony door to cool down the room.
Booked the Daniel Harris room, with valet parking. With upgrade breakfast. Check in was smooth, fast, and good. Arrived at my room to be met by previous guests laundry which stayed by my door for the duration on our stay.
We thoroughly enjoyed our Sunday night stay at the hotel. Great location, spacious room, huge comfortable bed.The bar in the basement was great with top class cocktail-making.
I’m sad to give this hotel only 3*, as the location is amazing, it’s convenient, has valet parking and staff are keen and helpful. But it’s all a bit slapdash and management need to get a grip. Restaurant is dark poky and stuffy, in the …
I booked an air conditioned room for the hottest day of my stay – it was over 30 degrees – and when I arrived to check in, I was told I was being given a room in a part of the former prison building that had no AC and would be very hot. I …
Hotel inside and out was amazing. Staff were extremely helpful, especially the man who checked us in and out.I have a few negatives, but I would definitely go back regardless. There could be more seating at the bar and not just stools. I …
Malmaison Hotel Oxford Prison
Delicious afternoon tea, great service. Very attentive staff. And great value for money!! Will definitely be back again.
As a converted old prison the location and design is amazing. They even have one of the old cells left as it was. Food lovely.

Sleep in a jail might not sound like a good idea but as a matter of fact, the place was restored with great style and the feeling is great. Was really a great surprise but if you are claustrophobic, consider again your choice.

A lovely hotel clean and front of house staff very polite and helpful. The restaurant staff customers were an inconvenience for. Breakfast as already reviewed was like a faulty towers experience! We received a refund for breakfast for both …
The room was nice, bed comfortable, and clean. It was certainly different, but did not warrant the money they charged. The shaver point did not work, plumbing was not good, as water stopped running, then spurted. This happened in both the basin and shower. Would not return, or recommend it.
Being a Bad Girls super fan, we had to stay at the original setting of the programme. While expensive, it’s a truly unique hotel. The internal courtyard area is a great place to sit in the warm summer evening with a drink or three.
I’ve of the most unusual, and unusually good, hotels I’ve ever stayed in; would definitely stay again. Excellent location. I stayed in the House of Corrections and found the room very comfortable. The staff are helpful and courteous, and friendly. Bonus: the breakfast was great, accompanied by the highest quality music I think I’ve heard in a hotel restaurant.
Lovely experience! Would definitely recommend for a special evening or get away. Rooms are gorgeous and the staff are attentive and friendly. Late check out was a real plus. Stayed as part of my birthday celebration and had a great time.
Great hotel set in an old castle prison. Staff friendly & helpful. Room far too hot with only a fan to cool it.
An actual ex-prison! Very nice rooms and arty elements. Not a lot of natural light internally! Nice experience!
On the positive: Centrally located and being in a prison was an experience to remember. A number of staff tried to sort out the issues but a lot was out of their control.||||However: Before I start they did reduce our costs for staying …
Great hotel. Clean , modern with a great atmosphere. Ideally located for the city centre.
Fantastic. Great ambiance, superb food. Friendly attentive staff. Good value.
We have today (05/10/19) checked out of Malmaison Oxford after a one night stay.|The worse hotel breakfast experience ever!!|On check in, our room had workmen’s stepladders in the room, a dirty flannel in the sink.. we were given an …
We had a lovely visit last Friday evening for drinks before going on for supper. We sat out in the sunshine and I managed to have a cushion for my chair which is helpful for poor old bones ! Unfortunately saw no sight of the nibbles advertised ! The Castle area is lovely.

It’s a converted prison which has huge character about it. Make sure you get a concerted cell room otherwise your room will be in the new part of the hotel where the rooms are nice but nothing special.||The food is good and decent amount of variety.||The staff were very helpful.||Great location for exploring the wonderful city of Oxford
Stayed Bank Holiday Saturday for one night in an open plan suite with my wife and two kids age 9 and 12. Check in was very easy, pre booked valet parking excellent, very efficient staff. Great to be able to have a larger room with both kids …
My son booked a night at the hotel for myself and my wife as a 70th birthday treat. Had a fantastic Sunday lunch. From the moment we arrived the staff did all they could to make our stay memorable. Booked a parking space as being in the …
Totally cool and unique hotel. Renovating a prison can’t be easy, but they did a great job and the rooms are spacious and comfy. Gotta stay here if visiting
We stayed here for my daughters graduation. We booked 3 double rooms. I was then sent an offer to upgrade these rooms to the “Cell” rooms, which I did. But on arrival at the hotel no “Cell” rooms were available. I was told that the email …
